Disney and the Seminole Tribe of Florida appear to be warring together against gambling competition by pumping millions into the state’s anti-casinos campaign, the Orlando Sentinel reported Thursday.
Only $1 million of the $27 million invested in the initiative is from other sources, financial reports show; $26 million came from Disney and the Seminoles.
Amendment 3, which is on the ballot in Florida on Nov. 6, is billed as giving voters the final say when it comes to authorizing casino gambling.
The amendment "will restore the system of requiring statewide voter approval for any future proposed casino gambling in Florida," says @VotersInCharge on Twitter.
Disney is known for its steadfast opposition to gambling, but could there be ulterior motives for why it has teamed up with the Seminole Tribe of Florida to invest in the amendment?
As the Orlando Sentinel noted, both stand to gain if the bill is passed.
The tribe runs several casinos in Florida while Disney has vested interest in maintaining its role as the dominant form of recreation.
The news outlet speculated that new casinos entering the state could threaten business operations for both parties.
As it stands, the Seminole tribe has invested $11 million into the campaign and Disney $15 million so far, The Orlando Sentinel reported.
