Democratic National Committee employee Seth Rich was killed over the weekend in a Washington, D.C., shooting, and Hillary Clinton on Tuesday invoked his death in the gun control debate.
"Just this past Sunday, a young man, Seth Rich, who worked for the Democratic National Committee to expand voting rights, was shot and killed in his neighborhood in Washington. He was just 27 years old," the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee said Tuesday,
according to The Washington Post.
"Surely we can agree that weapons of war have no place on the streets of America."
Rich was shot at about 4:20 a.m. Sunday in the Bloomingdale neighborhood of Northwest D.C.,
WUSA-TV reported. His roommate told the station that Rich may have been walking home from his girlfriend’s apartment when he was robbed and then shot.
"There had been a struggle. His hands were bruised, his knees are bruised, his face is bruised, and yet he had two shots to his back, and yet they never took anything," his mother, Mary Rich
told NBC4 Washington. "They took his life for literally no reason. They didn't finish robbing him, they just took his life."
Officers patrolling the area responded to the sound of gunshots and arrived at the scene to find Rich conscious and breathing,
CNN reported. He was later pronounced dead at an area hospital.
The D.C. Metropolitan Police Department is offering a $25,000 reward for information about the incident that leads to an arrest.
The Creighton University graduate joined the DNC in 2014 and worked as voter expansion data director.
On Monday, DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz released the following statement.
"Our hearts are broken with the loss of one of our DNC family members over the weekend," she said. "Seth Rich was a dedicated, selfless public servant who worked tirelessly to protect the most sacred right we share as Americans -- the right to vote. He saw the great potential of our nation and believed that, together, we can make the world a better place. He was a joy to have as a member of our team, and his talents, intelligence and enthusiasm will be deeply missed by the many friends, colleagues and coworkers who worked by his side in service to the highest ideals of our democracy."
