Donald Rumsfeld said Donald Trump would clearly get his vote. President George W. Bush's former secretary of defense let that be known in interviews Wednesday with Greta Van Susteren on Fox News and with London's Daily Mail.
Politico said Rumsfeld told Van Susteren on her "On the Record" show that he is "clearly" voting for Trump, and he charged that the news media have not portrayed Trump's comments on reforming NATO accurately.
"I had a staff person go back and tell me precisely what (Trump) did say about NATO and then I compared it with what the media and his opponents are saying he said about NATIO and there's a difference," Rumsfeld said, per Politico.
Rumsfeld told Van Susteren that he believed Hillary Clinton would have been prosecuted for her email scandal if she was a member of the military, noted the
Fox News Insider.
"I really believe that if she were a yeoman in the Navy or a sergeant in the Army or the Marine Corps or the Air Force that she'd be prosecuted," said Rumsfeld, per the Fox Insider.
In an interview with the
Daily Mail posted Wednesday, Rumsfeld said he did not believe Clinton was "qualified" to lead the country.
"I'm a Republican, and there's not any doubt in my mind how I'll vote," said Rumsfeld. "I don't believe Hillary Clinton is qualified to be president of the United States."
Rumsfeld said it was "not a close call," in deciding to support Trump over Clinton, emphasizing his positions on the NATO alliance and keeping Syrian refugees in their country because of possible terrorist infiltration.
Trump told the Daily Mail he was pleased with Rumsfeld endorsement.
"I am incredibly grateful for the support of Secretary Rumsfeld, and I am very honored he supports my stances on NATO, the need to defeat ISIS and stop immigration of Syrian refugees," Trump said.
