If Pope Francis ever expressed his concerns over capitalism to Donald Trump, the presidential frontrunner would just tell the leader of the Roman Catholic church, "ISIS wants to get you."
"I’d say, ‘ISIS wants to get you.’ You know that ISIS wants to go in and take over the Vatican? You have heard that. You know, that's a dream of theirs, to go into Italy,"
Trump told CNN's Chris Cuomo on Wednesday in response to a hypothetical question from the pontiff.
Trump’s answer visibly surprised Cuomo, who then asked if Trump would really scare the Pope.
"I'm gonna have to scare the Pope because it's the only thing," Trump said. "The Pope, I hope, can only be scared by God. But the truth is — you know, if you look at what's going on — they better hope that capitalism works, because it's the only thing we have right now. And it's a great thing when it works properly."
In an interview that touched on numerous topics — including Hillary Clinton, immigration, and the military — Trump, who specified that "I am Protestant. I am Presbyterian," didn’t hesitate to give his thoughts about the Pope, whom he said he respects greatly.
"I like the Pope. I actually like him. He's becoming very political, there's no question about it. But I like him. He seems like a pretty good guy," Trump said.
Predictably, Trump’s comments provoked a strong Internet response.
