'Doomsday Castle' on NatGeo Chronicles Family's Fortress (Video)

By    |   Tuesday, 13 August 2013 02:00 PM EDT

"Doomsday Castle" is the National Geographic Channel's newest end-times reality show that chronicles the lives of the Bruns family, who are building their own apocalyptic fortress deep in the Carolina mountains.

Led by dad Brent Bruns Sr., the family is building a giant medieval castle — complete with a drawbridge — to shield them from an electromagnetic pulse, which they believe could be the beginning of anarchy.

"It's a real possibility," Bruns told LiveScience.com. "Nuclear explosions can create EMPs — if one was detonated in the high atmosphere, it could knock out power to one-fourth of the United States by destroying computers that run everything."

Self-proclaimed "preppers," or people who're preparing for the end of the world, Bruns and his family aren’t quite sure when disaster will strike, but want to be equipped when it does.

"Most people have enough food for about 10 days. If there are no trucks to replenish the food supply, though, that's a major problem," he said. "If the government isn't there to help them out, fighting and looting will eventually start — like you saw during Hurricane Katrina — and could eventually reach the countryside.

"The calmest person in the world will turn into a savage if he sees his baby crying and his children go hungry. I built the castle to defend against marauders and to have a place that could function without electricity."

Twitter users are intrigued and excited about the new prepper show "Doomsday Castle."

"Doomsday Castle" premieres Tuesday night at 10 p.m. EDT on National Geographic.
