Drew Barrymore has revealed that her grandfather's corpse was "stolen" by his friends for one last party. For years there have been bizarre rumors that Errol Flynn, W.C. Fields, and Sadakichi Hartmann snatched John Barrymore's body from a morgue in May 1942, then propped him up against a poker table for a final night together, and now Barrymore has admitted that the wild theories are true.
"I hope my friends do the same for me," the 45-year-old actress joked on the YouTube channel "Hot Ones" on Thursday. "That is the kind of spirit I can get behind. Just prop the old bag up and have a last few rounds."
Barrymore added that death was a somber occasion but she hoped things would be different for her.
"I think death comes with so much morose sadness, and I understand that, but if it’s OK, just with me, if everyone can be really happy and celebratory and have a party, that would be my preference," she said.
During her interview, the actress also confirmed that there have been movies inspired by the story of her grandfather's body being stolen.
"Not only yes [about the rumor], but there have been cinematic interpretations of that," she said. "A Blake Edwards film called 'S.O.B.' that’s just brilliant and fun to watch."
Barrymore is speaking ahead of the launch of her new daytime talk show, "The Drew Barrymore Show," which airs on Sept. 14 on CBS, according to Fox News. She said it has been a longtime coming.
"I’m really looking forward to this digital world we are about to bring you into," Barrymore said in a recent press release. "I have been on this show journey for a year. We started in 2019, it is now 2020, a very different year."
