Duchess Kate Middleton, pregnant with her second child, is again struggling with hyperemesis gravidarum, a severe pregnancy sickness, and
may have to cancel her planned trip to Malta because of it, People reported.
The duchess is scheduled to fly to Malta on Sept. 20 on behalf of the Queen to attend the official commemoration of Malta’s independence. And while she is said to be eager to go, the royal family also is making a backup plan for someone, possibly Prince William, to go in her place.

Caitlin Dean, an expert on hyperemesis gravidarum, said that she would be surprised if the Duchess does make the trip, People reported.
"It’s hard enough being in a car with this condition," Dean said. "A major part of managing the condition is making sure you are able to rest, and even if you can do short periods of being up and about, you have to rest afterwards.”
Middleton recently canceled an appearance at Prince Harry's Invictus Games and
further trips are under review, according to the International Business Times.
The trip to Malta would be Middleton’s first solo trip representing the royal family.
Hyperemesis gravidarum is a severe form of morning sickness.
"With hyperemesis, it is constant. You are constantly being sick, you can't keep anything down and it can make you very drained,”
Alison Edwards, senior lecturer in Midwifery at Birmingham City University, said, according to an article in the Irish Independent. “It's like having gastric flu for weeks on end. It's awful. You can be hospitalised for six, seven weeks, possibly more. That has a massive effect on everything: your social life, family, your mood."
