A dramatic new two-minute trailer for the Christopher Nolan WWII epic “Dunkirk” shows One Direction’s Harry Styles nearly drowning, Sir Kenneth Branagh as an officer, and German and Allied soldiers doing battle.
The cast of “Dunkirk” is star-studded, including Cillian Murphy, Mark Rylance, and a brief appearance by Academy Award nominee Tom Hardy, besides Branagh and Styles.
The epic seems destined to be one of the biggest movies of 2017. Director Nolan has worked on such blockbusters as “The Dark Knight” trilogy, “Inception,” and “Interstellar.”
The film is based on the 1940 Dunkirk evacuation, called Operation Dynamo, during World War II, where 300,000 Allied soldiers were rescued in one week by the British Navy and civilians after German forces invaded the French port of Dunkirk. It features several battles, including one between 400,000 Allied forces and the Germans, as well as more intimate scenes between the main characters, The Verge notes.
A 1958 film about Dunkirk starred John Mills, Richard Attenborough, and Robert Urquhart.
Unlike earlier films by Nolan, “Dunkirk” seems to play more as straight action, without the twists and big concepts seen in “The Dark Knight” or “Interstellar,” for instance. The visuals look to be stunning, however, and include authentic period vehicles rather than reliance on CGI.
The Warner Bros. movie will hit U.S. theaters in July.
The two-minute trailer is available to watch now, with an extended promo running before "Star Wars: Rogue One" when it opens Friday, The Verge reported.
