Durant Tattoo Gaffe: NBA Player's Scripture Quote Is Misspelled

Kevin Durant's full-back tattoo, which the basketball player has been adding to for years, was completed recently and shared on Instagram on Wednesday where observers noted the scripture passage included a misspelled word.

In the biblical verse from James 1:2-4, the word "mature" is spelled "mautre."

The passage is supposed to read: "Consider it a sheer gift, friends, when tests and challenges come at you from all sides. You know that under pressure, your faith-life is forced into the open and shows its true colors. So don’t try to get out of anything prematurely. Let it do its work so you become mature and well-developed, not deficient in any way."

Above the passage, which takes up nearly half of his torso covering tattoo, there is an angel holding a basketball looking down on a headshot of Jesus.

Washington Post Sports' Writer Sarah Kogod was apparently one of the first to notice the misspelled tattoo, tweeting the image and her observation out to followers.

The photo of the tattoo was quickly retweeted out by various individuals, apparently making its way back to Durant who had the tattoo fixed within hours of the original post.

Durant posted a photo of the correctly spelled tattoo on his Instagram page late last night.

A 3-time NBA scoring champion, the 24-year-old forward, who plays for the Oklahoma City Thunder and stands 6' 9" tall, is among the top players in the NBA. Durant was the youngest player ever to win the NBA scoring title and also won gold in the 2010 World Championship and the 2012 London Olympics.

Following the devastating tornado that that ripped through the town of Moore, Okla., on Monday, Durant donated $1 million to help the victims of the storm.

Durant was blamed for the tornado by the The Westboro Baptist Church for his support of fellow NBA player Jason Collins' recent declaration that he is gay. The church is notorious for its anti-gay protests at dead soldier's funerals.
