Actor and former pro wrestler Dwayne Johnson has revealed he battled depression after witnessing his mother attempt suicide when he was 15.
"Struggle and pain is real. I was devastated and depressed. I reached a point where I didn't want to do a thing or go anywhere. I was crying constantly," the former WWE champion told The Express.
The event occurred on a Tennessee highway a few months after he and his mother Ada were evicted from their apartment.
"She got out of the car on Interstate 65 in Nashville and walked into oncoming traffic. Big rigs and cars swerving outta the way not to hit her. I grabbed her and pulled her back of the gravel shoulder of the road," he wrote on Instagram a month prior. The post was prompted by his role in the HBO series "Ballers," which deals with the subject of suicide.
The actor, whose latest film is "Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle," added: "What's crazy about that suicide attempt is that to this day, she has no recollection of it whatsoever. Probably best she doesn't."
Johnson, 45, later expressed his thanks to those who wished him well.
"Got tons of responses to this. Thank you. We all go thru the sludge/s*** and depression never discriminates. Took me a long time to realize it but the key is to not be afraid to open up. Especially us dudes have a tendency to keep it in. You’re not alone," he wrote on Twitter.
Johnson’s fans were quick to show support.
