Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson says he is "seriously considering" running for U.S. president after a "groundswell" of public support.
The 45-year-old actor and former WWE wrestling star said he is going to "watch and learn" while he works on details that would need to be resolved before he could move forward with a presidential run.
"Politics is not my business," Johnson told USA Today. "So the consideration is there."
He said if he does decide to run, it will be "to serve the people, and create a better environment for them."
Johnson already has a lot on his plate. His next movie, “Jumanji,” releases Wednesday, and he has several other movies in the works, including “Skyscraper” (July 13) and a “Fast & Furious” spinoff with Jason Statham in 2019 as well as a baby on the way with Lauren Hashian. (He has a 16-year-old daughter, Simone, with ex-wife Dany Garcia and a 2-year-old daughter Jasmine with Hashian.)
Johnson said he is currently registered as an independent voter, and it is unclear which party he might choose if he does run, USA Today reported.
There is also a discrepancy about whether he would shoot for the 2020 presidential election or wait until 2024, with USA Today reporting he’s aiming for the earlier race, while Variety said he would shoot for 2024 because he thought 2020’s field was already crowded.
"I care deeply about our country, and I care deeply about our people — especially now," Johnson told Variety. "Decency matters and being a decent human being matters, and character matters, and leadership matters."
Johnson has 175 million followers on social media around the world.
Twitter users were mostly against Johnson’s candidacy for various reasons.
