Dzhokhar Tsarnaev Injuries Upon Arrest Detailed in Unsealed Transcripts

By    |   Tuesday, 20 August 2013 06:38 PM EDT

Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev had multiple injuries — he'd been shot in the face and was suffering from a broken skull — when authorities found him hiding in a boat, newly unsealed court documents show.

Dr. Stephen Ray Odom detailed the injuries during a court hearing at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center three days after Tsarnaev was captured while hiding in a boat in Watertown, Mass., the Los Angeles Times reported. U.S. District Judge George O’Toole, Jr., ordered the transcripts unsealed on Monday.

Odom treated Tsarnaev after the suspect was taken there. He said in the transcripts that the worst injury was a bullet wound that fractured the base of Tsarnaev’s skull and damaged his ear, pharynx, and mouth. Tsarnaev also suffered “multiple gunshot wounds to the extremities,” Odom said.

In the transcripts, Odom said Tsarnaev received the pain medication Dilaudid, but noted the suspect “definitely knows where he is” and could answer questions, The Boston Globe reported.

Police captured Tsarnaev on April 19 after they found him hiding in a boat in the backyard of a Watertown home. Police killed his older brother, Tamerlan, in a shootout.

The Globe says a witness described police opening fire on the boat before arresting Tsarnaev.

Tsarnaev has been charged with multiple counts in connection with the Boston Marathon attacks and could face the death penalty if convicted. Three people were killed and more than 260 people were wounded when the explosives went off near the finish line at one of the world’s most famous running events. The brothers also are accused of shooting and killing MIT police Officer Sean Collier.

Tsarnaev has pleaded not guilty to the charges. He’s being held at the Federal Medical Center, Devens, in Devens, Mass.

Neither Tsarnaev’s lawyer, Miriam Conrad, nor a spokesperson for U.S. Attorney Carmen Ortiz, would comment on the latest developments.
