Vanity Fair Editor Graydon Carter took to the pages of his magazine to explain the magazine's feud with actress Gwyneth Paltrow, attempting to make amends by saying that the planned story about her was never meant to be a takedown piece.
Carter said in the magazine's Editor's Letter, published online Tuesday, that contributing editor Vanessa Grigoriadis wrote the story and it focused on why people have such passionate, polar opposite views of Paltrow. Carter said he ended up sitting on the story after rumors swirled about it.

"Vanessa turned in her story at the end of the summer. And it was just what had been assigned — a reasoned, reported essay on the hate/love-fest that encircles Gwyneth Paltrow," Carter wrote. "I thought it perfectly explained the whole phenomenon. But it was such a far cry from the almost mythical story that people were by now expecting — the 'epic takedown,' filled with 'bombshell' revelations — that it was bound to be a disappointment. What to do? I decided to sit on it for a time."
The New York Times reported in September that Paltrow sent out an email to her Hollywood friends asking them not to participate in Vanity Fair interviews about her.
"Vanity Fair is threatening to put me on the cover of their magazine," Paltrow wrote in an email to friends, the New York Times reported. "If you are asked for quotes or comments, please decline. Also, I recommend you all never do this magazine again."
Carter said that he and Paltrow talked on the phone in October about the article and her "haters" in hopes of clearing the air with the actress, but the rumors about Paltrow and Vanity Fair's feud persisted.
"Two months after the phone call, websites lit up with news of a truce," Carter wrote. "We received more mail, much of it now criticizing us for caving. There had also been conflicting reports that Gwyneth had coerced George Clooney into not being on our cover — clearly not true."
The cooling has not stopped some of Paltrow's friends from joking about the incident.
During the Vanity Fair photo shoot Tuesday for its annual Oscars edition, when George Clooney was asked how it felt to be included, he responded, according to Us Weekly, "It's very exciting. I think it's going to be fun. That's what Gwyneth Paltrow told me to say."
