Edward Snowden: Gets Job on Website, Perhaps Russia's Facebook

By    |   Thursday, 31 October 2013 12:09 PM EDT

Edward Snowden, the former security contractor who blew the lid off the National Security Agency's surveillance program back in June, has landed a new job with one of Russia's largest websites, his lawyer announced Thursday.

"Edward starts working from November 1. He will be part of the support team of one of the largest Russian websites. I can't say the name of the website now for security reasons," attorney Anatoly Kucherena told Russian news agency, RIA Novosti.

Some have speculated that Snowden has signed on with VKontakte.ru, Russia's equivalent of Facebook. A company spokesman wouldn't comment, but also wouldn't deny the claim.

Spokesman Georgy Lobushkin said at a corporate event in August that he could see Snowden assisting VKontakte in maintaining the security of its online chat program, according to RIA Novosti.

Snowden, 30, faces espionage and theft of government property charges for exposing the NSA's Internet-tapping program. He's kept a low profile since fleeing the United States in June, traveling first to Hong Kong and then to Russia, where he spent a month in a lounge at Moscow's Sheremetyevo airport before he was granted temporary asylum.

He's been spotted periodically, out shopping or cruising around on a boat in Moscow.
