Mexican authorities are keeping a close eye on the beauty queen wife of El Chapo under the assumption that the escaped drug cartel leader may try to contact her.
Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, 60, and Emma Coronel, 25, were married in 2007, just after she turned 18; the beauty queen is his third wife and the mother of
Guzman’s twin girls, the Daily Mail reported.
The Mail learned that Mexican federal authorities are calling Coronel their "highest-priority surveillance target" ever since Guzman escaped from prison on Saturday.
The daring prison escape of one of the world’s most-wanted criminals has been covered endlessly, especially once it was revealed that El Chapo got out through a mile-long escape tunnel that
started in his shower, CNN reported.
Police did not confirm to the Mail whether they even know where Coronel is. Guzman and Coronel make up a power couple in the Mexican drug cartel world, their marriage combining two of the top families in the Sinaloa Cartel, the Mail said.
"The marriage between El Chapo and Coronel was seen by many as a calculated move to bind the ties between the cartel's central families," the newspaper wrote. "Coronel's father, Inés Coronel, was the director of drug smuggling operations for the Sinaloa cartel along the Arizona section of the US border with Mexico."
Despite the seriousness of the escape, El Chapo’s ability to get out of a maximum security prison for the second time in his life has entertained the Internet community:
It has also generated a reward of $3.8 million for information leading to his capture.
"Guzman has been a nightmare for both sides of the border," CNN wrote. "He reigns over a multibillion-dollar global drug empire that supplied much of the marijuana, cocaine and heroin sold on the streets of the United States. Chicago has labeled him the city's 'Public Enemy No. 1.'"
