The Chihuahuas team name was announced, reported the El Paso Times, during a celebration at El Paso's Plaza Theatre on Tuesday The Chihuahuas were chosen from a list of other names that included the Aardvarks, Buckaroos, Desert Gators and Sun Dogs.
"Think about grabbing onto this little guy," Brad Taylor, the Chihuahuas' general manager told the El Paso Times about the new team name. "There is a product experience for everyone. I think within the next six to seven months you will see people embracing the brand. When they see all the great events we will host in the new minor major league park here in El Paso, they will see that this is what we are."

Starting with the Toledo Mud Hens, minor league baseball teams have always sought a claim on unique nicknames to draw attention or take advance of marketing possibilities.
The Chihuahuas will find plenty of company in the uniqueness department in minor league baseball, which also fields teams named the Lansing Lugnuts, Savannah Sand Gnats, Richmond Flying Squirrels, Las Vegas 51s (as in Area 51), Montgomery Biscuits and the Albuquerque Isotopes,
according to the Bleacher Report.
"This is for children and families and fun," Taylor told the El Paso Times. "Give us a chance. See the consistent experience people will get coming into the park each night."
There was no shortage of comments, and snark, on Twitter about the new Chihuahuas' nickname.
