Ellen DeGeneres has reportedly bumped Kim Burrell from her talk show after the gospel singer's alleged anti-gay sermon went viral on social media last week, Janelle Monae told TMZ Tuesday.
Monae, who plays Mary Jackson in the film "Hidden Figures," told TMZ she was expected to be on the show with Pharrell Williams and Burrell, who perform a song for the movie soundtrack. Monae, who is also a singer, said only she and Williams will now be on the show.
According to DeGeneres' website Tuesday, Burrell was still listed as a performer with Williams, singing "I See a Victory" on the show Thursday.
But DeGeneres addressed the question on Twitter, saying Burrell would not appear.
Burrell was criticized after a video emerged last month in which she preached against homosexuality, Entertainment Weekly reported.
"That perverted homosexual spirit, and the spirit of delusion and confusion, it has deceived many men and women. … It has come into our church and it has embarrassed the kingdom of God," Burrell said, according to Entertainment Weekly.
Williams appeared to address the subject with a New Year's Eve post, said that he rejects "hate speech of any kind."
Burrell appeared to embrace her comments with two videos last week, according to Entertainment Weekly.
"I never said LGBT, I said S-I-N," Burrell said in the first video, per Entertainment Weekly. "… To every person that is dealing with the homosexual spirit, that has it, I love you because God loves you. But God hates the sin in you and me, anything that is against the nature of God. I'm called to do what God called me to do, and that’s it, and I do it with passion."
In a second video, according to Entertainment Weekly, Burrell added that she "never said that all gays were going to hell. That never came out of my mouth. … I said people who operate with that spirit in the church with deception and attack themselves are going to have to face the master."
People magazine noted that Burrell is also a pastor and founder of the Love and Liberty Fellowship Church International, a non-denominational Christian church in Houston.
