Ellen DeGeneres and Portia De Rossi's Montecito estate has been robbed by thieves that have been terrorizing the neighborhood and breaking into several celebrity homes.
According to the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office, the incident took place on July 4 and police believe the couple's home was "targeted due to the victim’s celebrity status," TMZ reported.
The value of what was taken is unclear but high-end jewelry and watches were among the stolen items. There have been various celebrity home burglaries in recent weeks and law enforcement agencies are investigating to see whether this case is linked to the others. Cops have advised residents in the area to avoid leaving lights and TVs on while away and to refrain from posting on social media about being on vacation.
DeGeneres purchased the Montecito estate for $27 million in 2019, according to Mansion Global. The 8,188-square-foot Balinese-style home, which sits on 8.24 acres of land, features five bedrooms, a two-bedroom guest house, a pool that overlooks the ocean and a cabana that doubles as a gym. DeGeneres and de Rossi sold off their previous six-bedroom home in Montecito to Netflix executive Ted Sarandos for $34 million in 2018.
Recently, DeGeneres came underfire for comparing her self-isolation in her mansion to jail. The comedian cracked the joke in April during an episode of her show, which she hosted from the luxurious comfort of her home amid the coronavirus pandemic.
"This is like being in jail is what it is," she said. "Mostly because I’ve been wearing the same clothes for 10 days and everyone in here is gay!"
