“He’s showing great spirit,” Sutter told The Detroit News. “He’s a fighter, and we’re glad to see that.”

Leonard, who got the 2012 Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters from the National Book Foundation, is writing his 46th book, said CNN Entertainment.

Leonard’s books and screenplays include "Out of Sight," "The Switch," "Get Shorty," and "Hombre." CNN said he’s known for “signature prose and unforgettable characters.”

“For over five decades, Leonard’s westerns, crime novels and serialized novels, and stories have enthralled generations of readers,” CNN quoted from a National Book Foundation statement.

Many of Leonard’s books have found their way to the big screen, including "Hombre" and "Jackie Brown." The most recent is "The Switch," which will debut at the Toronto International Film Festival in September and stars Jennifer Aniston, Mos Def, and Tim Robbins.

The television series “Justified” is based on Leonard’s short story, “Fire in the Hole.”
