Evan Reed, Detroit Tigers Pitcher, Investigated for Sexual Assault

By    |   Tuesday, 08 April 2014 04:06 PM EDT

Detroit Tigers right-handed relief pitcher Evan Reed is being investigated for an alleged sexual assault against a woman that occurred on March 30, the day before the team’s 2014 home opening game.

A 45-year-old woman told police that she had met Reed at a bar in the Royal Oak suburb of Detroit on March 30, the Detroit Free Press reported. She alleges she was drugged and taken to a Motor City Casino hotel room where she was sexually assaulted by Reed.

The woman reported her allegations to law enforcement the following day and was tested for drugs but the results have not been released.

According to a Free Press unnamed source, there is video surveillance footage that shows the woman getting out of a cab with Reed at the casino and her struggling to stand and walk. Reed apparently asked a security guard for help getting into his room after forgetting his key. That guard, the source said, said the woman with Reed appeared to be intoxicated.

As of Monday night, Reed hadn’t been charged with a crime.

The Tigers organization released a statement Monday, saying they are aware of the “very serious allegation” made against Reed.

“This allegation is concerning and we are aware of an ongoing investigation. It would be inappropriate for the ballclub to comment further at this time,” the statement said.

David Gorcyca, Reed’s attorney, also released a statement, saying his client would cooperate with the investigation “when the time is appropriate.”

“We are very confident that once a thorough and full investigation is completed, Mr. Reed will have nothing to fear,” he said, according to the Free Press. “During the infancy of this investigation, no one should formulate any conclusions that a crime has been committed.”

The unmarried 28-year-old pitcher and California native was acquired by the Tigers a year ago and made his major-league debut against the Texas Rangers in May of last year.
