Walmart and Evenflo are working together to prevent hot car deaths, announcing on Thursday a new baby seat that will alert parents if a baby is in the car seat when the car is turned off.
More than 40 babies die each year because they are inadvertently left in hot cars.
Called the Evenflo Advanced SensorSafe™ Embrace, the seat will use a wireless receiver to communicate with a car’s On Board Diagnostic port,
a Walmart release said. If the chest clip that goes around the baby is still clipped when the car is turned off, an alarm will sound. The seat will sell exclusively at Walmart for $149.88.
The announcement of the collaboration with Evenflo on the car seat is part of a multi-pronged approach to expanding its baby product offerings.
"The retailer also shared its commitment to lead the baby industry in three key areas: product safety, national brands at low prices, and baby-clock shopping — a term the retailer has coined to describe the moment parents find it most convenient to shop, whether it’s in a store after that well-needed nap or in the still of the night," the release said.
Many online greeted the new technology with excitement:
Jarrod Tanz from Wired magazine demonstrated the new car seat on the "Today" show Thursday. He said a dongle plugs into the car’s data port and it will set a sensor off if the clip on the baby’s chest isn’t opened.
