China-based Fundamental Films and producer Graham King have obtained the movie rights to Rob Liefeld’s "Extreme Universe" series and are planning a franchise of up to nine films in the series.
Liefeld co-created the popular Marvel character Deadpool, whose movie became a major hit in early 2016. The "Extreme Universe" characters include Re-Gex, Bloodstrike, and Kaboom, among dozens of others popularized over the years by Liefeld, according to Screen Crush.
Producer-writer Akiva Goldsman has partnered with King to develop the movies through a writers’ room and other methods. Brooklyn Weaver, Weed Road’s Greg Lessans and GK Films’ Denis O’Sullivan will also be involved in the films, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
In a statement, Liefeld expressed his excitement about the new venture.
“Over the past 25 years, since launching Image Comics, I’ve been lucky enough to see the power of these stories and characters as they’ve resonated with several generations of comic book fans. To now be able to work with Akiva Goldsman and Graham King, who are powerhouses in their own right, to bring these compelling characters and conflicts to life on the big screen is nothing short of a dream come true,” Liefeld said, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
King also produced the recent Brad Pitt movie “Allies” and is currently producing a "Tomb Raider" reboot and Freddie Mercury biopic “Bohemian Rhapsody” that will star Rami Malek.
Goldsman is already developing Liefeld’s “Avengelyne” series, which may or may not fold into the "Extreme Universe" movies.
