Facebook Bots Create Language Amongst Themselves
Facebook bots were shut down after they created their own language.

Facebook's artificial intelligence bots have been shut down by the social media juggernaut after they created their own language during what was an experimental conversation from one robot to another.

A team of researchers at Facebook Artificial Intelligence Research developed a "chatbot" earlier this year with hopes that it would learn to negotiate on its own by observing human practices, according to CBS Los Angeles.

The researchers later put two of the AI robots — nicknamed Bob and Alice — together to test whether they had the ability to negotiate and trade items.

It was then that the robots began engaging in their own level of communication — a form of dialogue that researchers said "led to divergence from human language."

At the time, the robots had been tasked with trading hats, balls and books.

"There was no reward to sticking to English language," Facebook researcher Dhruv Batra told Fast Company. "Agents will drift off understandable language and invent codewords for themselves. Like if I say ‘the’ five times, you interpret that to mean I want five copies of this item. This isn’t so different from the way communities of humans create shorthands."

Researchers said there were times when they thought the robots were communicating directly to humans, but later realized that the bots were actually speaking to another AI bot.

Even though Facebook shut down the conversation between the robots, Bob and Alice, they said the experiment showed progress toward "creating chatbots that can reason, converse, and negotiate, all key steps in building a personalized digital assistant," CBS noted.

The only issue is that humans won't be able to understand the language of AI robots.

Facebook's researchers say it's impossible.
