A baseball fan saved a baby sitting behind her by reaching up and one-handedly snagging a loose bat out of the air right before it hit the child and its mother during a Naperville, Florida, game between the White Sox and the Indians on Monday.
White Sox catcher Tyler Flowers accidentally lost the bat after a swing. It bounced once on the top of the dugout and then sailed toward the crowd. Luckily, Eileen Depesa, a Naperville fan, managed to catch the bat one-handed.

“That was a great break, the fact that it hit off the top of a dugout, and then a beautiful catch,” an announcer says on the MLB video. “A great catch on one hop, and she went up and got it. She got it one-handed. Boy, sign her to a contract.”
The impressive catch would have earned Depesa a contract in more than one sport if fans had any say in the matter.
“It was a heck of a save by that lady. Her husband / boyfriend sitting next to her obviously wanted no part of the flying bat. Any chance we can sign her to the Blackhawks to replace Crawford?”
a commenter wrote on Capitol Fax.
Other impressive catches off the field at baseball games make the news occasionally. In 2011, a fan caught a flying bat while not spilling a drop of his beer.
The same thing happened at a Blue Jays game in 2013, with another impressive catch that looked as if the fan planned it.
Flying bats and baseballs can, of course, be dangerous. A fan in Britain was hurt in 2010 by a loose bat, but still managed to give a thumbs up as he was carried away on a stretcher.
