The FBI raided San Juan, Puerto Rico, municipal offices Tuesday in connection with accusations of corruption, according to reports.
"Dozens" of agents were involved in the raid, according to The Hill, which cited local news sources.
City officials, including the office of Mayor Carmen Yulin Cruz, are being investigated over accusations of favoritism in a $4.7 million contract with the company BR Solutions, according to The Hill.
"The raid helps us to confirm whether the allegations of irregularities are substantiated or not," FBI spokesman Carlos Osario told El Nuevo Dia. "We are filling out a search warrant, looking for documents and evidence that can support the allegation."
CBS News correspondent David Begnaud tweeted that an FBI spokesman in San Juan said the mayor has instructed employees to cooperate fully with the investigation.
Cruz tweeted: "If someone has done something wrong must be subjected to a due process and face the consequences of their actions."
Agents were on several floors of Torre Municipal de San Juan, according to NBC Philadelphia.
Last month, President Donald Trump accused Puerto Rican officials of allowing widespread corruption, The Hill noted.
Cruz has been a vocal critic of Trump in the wake of Hurricane Maria. Trump returned criticism, saying he wouldn't consider statehood for Puerto Rico under current leadership.
"With the mayor of San Juan as bad as she is and as incompetent as she is, Puerto Rico shouldn't be talking about statehood until they get some people that really knows what they're doing," Trump said in an interview on Cleveland's WTAM radio.
