The FEC says Donald Trump's campaign erred in reporting about 1,100 donations worth about $1.3 million that may have violated campaign finance laws.
The donations came from groups that weren't properly registered with the Federal Election Commission and others whose donations exceeded the donation limits, the FEC said in a letter asking the Trump campaign to correct the errors.
"If any apparently prohibited contribution in question was incompletely or incorrectly disclosed, you should amend your original report with clarifying information. In addition, please clarify whether the contribution(s) received from the referenced organization(s) is permissible," said the letter, addressed to Trump campaign treasurer Timothy Jost. "If you have received prohibited contributions, you must make a refund."
Larry Noble of the Campaign Legal Center called the letter "fairly routine," CNN reported, noting that Bernie Sanders received a similar letter in May, and President Barack Obama has received several such letters.
The Trump campaign received the letter after switching to digital fundraising in July, CNN said.
The Trump campaign reported raising $67 million, during the first 19 days of October, including $35 million in small-dollar contributions, generally defined as $200 or less, The Hill reported. Earlier this month, the campaign said it raised a total of $100 million in small-donor contributions from 1.6 million donors throughout October.
Salon characterized the letter as an apparent step to address "mounting evidence and growing complaints that Donald Trump’s presidential campaign improperly coordinated with supportive super PACs during the election."
Twitter users were critical of the errors.
