United Flight 1074 bound for Denver had to return to Washington's Dulles International Airport after a passenger rushed toward the airplane's cockpit and was subdued by other abord the flight. A YouTube video shows him being restrained.
The passenger became violent shortly after takeoff on Monday night and the pilot told air traffic controllers that other passengers restrained the man before he breached the cockpit,
reported ABC News.
"One held his feet and the other one kind of laid on top of him and then the flight attendants went and got some plastic restraints for his arms," Donna Tellam, a passenger on the flight, told ABC News. "At one point when his head was down he said there were jihadists in the cargo hold and he did say jihad a couple times."
Tellam told the
Washington Post that one man was on top of the suspect and another took hold of his feet.
"The guy who brought him down had the guy behind him take off his shoes, check for bombs and check for weapons," Tellam told the Post. "That was everyone's first concern. So we heard him telling them please pat him down and make sure he doesn't have anything on him."
Cosmopolitan reported that a Reddit user named iLL_D posted a video on Imgur from someone reportedly on the flight and the video was then reposted it on YouTube.
"This just happened, my father was on the plane and took this picture," the Reddit user posted. "He was screaming and sprinting towards the cockpit. Several large passengers tackled him before he even reached the door."
Pilots listed the incident as a "Level 2" disturbance, the second-lowest level of severity on a four-level scale. A Level 2 disturbance means that there is physically abusive behavior onboard but no life-threatening behavior, noted the Post.
Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Police Department officers took the suspect into custody and transported him to a local hospital for observation.
The Post reported no charges had been filed in the incident so far and authorities have did not release any additional information about the man involved.
