A Florida girl pried open an alligator’s jaws to escape an attack by the 8-foot, 9-inch beast Saturday afternoon.

The 10-year-old girl was sitting in shallow water at what was supposed to be a designated swimming area at Moss Park in Orange County, Florida, when the gator attacked her, according to the Orlando Sentinel.

The girl was just feet away from family members when the gator bit her calf and knee. She was able to pry open the reptile’s jaws to get her leg free. She suffered several injuries from the attack, according to ABC News.

She has puncture wounds on the back of her knee and lower thigh.

After being treated by lifeguards, the girl’s family took her to a children’s hospital for further treatment. She’s been released.

Following the incident, the gator was captured and removed from Lake Mary Jane, where the attack occurred.

Matt Suedmeyer, the manager of the Orange County Parks & Recreation Division, said the area is temporarily closed, according to The Associated Press.

The attack comes nearly a year after an alligator killed a 2-year-old boy at a Walt Disney resort.
