Flying 'Sportscar' Crashes Into Hanger Seconds After Takeoff

A flying "sportscar" crashed into a hanger just seconds after taking off, with both pilot and passenger somehow escaping serious although the vehicle at first appeared in video footage to be obliterated.

The disastrous takeoff occurred last Friday in Dubai, with video scooped up by The Drive and showing the Skyrunner Light Sport UTV accelerate and lift off from a grassy runway.

It looks like smooth sailing as the parachute unfurls, but the pilot fails to gain enough altitude and smacks into the top of the building at the end the grassy runway.

SkyRunner CEO Stewart Hamel told Gizmodo that the incident involved a third party who was not affiliated with the company.

“A company which owns a SkyRunner was performing a routine flight on Friday when it came in contact with a building,” he said.

Hamel noted that the pilot and passenger had both sustained injuries following the crash but they were in stable condition.

“We understand the incident is currently under investigation in the UAE and we will report further when we know more,” he added.

The SkyRunner, which starts at $139,000, is an FAA-certified aircraft and a sport pilot license is required before the vehicle can be operated, The Drive noted.

There is still room for error though, and considering that the vehicle can soar up to 10,000 feet in the air and cruise at nearly 50 mph, that could be fatal.
