The 2017 Ford GT is turning heads with a top speed of 216 miles per hour, a time that surpasses supercars like the McLaren 675LT and the Ferrari 458 Speciale.
During testing at Canada's Calabogie Motorsports Park by Ford with the same driver, the GT raced around the 3.1-mile track at 2:09.8 compared the McLaren's time of 2:10.8 and the Ferrari's 2:12.9, Motor Authority noted.
"The top speed is 216 mph, making the GT the fastest production car in Ford history," wrote Motor Authority editor Viknesh Vijayenthiran. "We don't have a figure for acceleration but most of the cars in this class will hit 60 mph in 3.0 seconds or less and we have no doubt that the same will be true for the GT.
"This was no independent test so the figures shouldn't be taken at face value. However, they do provide a benchmark in which future tests can be measured against. We're sure if Ford isn't willing to deliver a GT for testing some owners will," Vijayenthiran added.
Road & Track magazine reported that the GT claims 647 horsepower from its 3.5-liter EcoBoost twin-turbo V6 engine. It has a curb weight of 3,054 pounds, which falls between the McLaren (2,982 pounds) and the Ferrari (3,252 pounds).
"We achieved a lot of weight savings with the carbon fiber monocoque and aluminum structure," Raj Nair, executive vice president of product development at Ford, told Road & Track. "But as we did the simulations and some of the testing with the mules, we thought it was worth reinvesting some of that [weight savings] into the active aero and the active suspension. We were faster by putting the systems in. So we felt it was worth reinvesting it into getting the lap times. We would have been right there on dry weight without that."
The speedy GT received plenty of positive comments on social media.
