Some parents are hiring "Fortnite" tutors at up to $20 an hour to coach their children to become more adept at the video game.
"Fortnite" is a popular Battle Royale game from Epic Games, and may be played on numerous platforms, including iPhone, Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
The game involves "Hunger Games"-like competitions among 100 players, playing either in teams or individually, and the last one standing wins. "Fortnite" is becoming a "social proving ground" for kids, The Wall Street Journal reported.
“There’s pressure not to just play it but to be really good at it,” Ally Hicks, who paid for four hours of tutor instruction for her 10-year-old son, told the WSJ. “You can imagine what that was like for him at school.”
Nick Mennen is another parent who paid for the extra help for his 12-year-old son Noble, who went from the bottom of the pack to “throw[ing] down 10 to 20 wins,” Mennen told the WSJ.
Although "Fortnite" is free to participate in, it’s racked up huge profits through the sale of player advantages, such as gliders and pickaxes.
Bloomberg reported last week Fortnite is expected to generate $2 billion in 2018 for its parent Epic.
Twitter users were in disbelief that parents would hire "Fortnite" tutors.
