With Fourth of July preparations in full swing, patriotism in America is soaring.
The two are closely linked, as Brigham Young University political science professor Jeremy Pope pointed out when he said it only made sense to love America by accepting the core of ideas that motivate the country — which in the U.S. is found in the Declaration of Independence.
Ahead of the festivities, WalletHub recently set out to determine which of the 50 U.S. states were the most patriotic by comparing 13 relevant metrics across two key dimensions, military engagement and civic engagement.
Included in the metrics were veterans per 1,000 civilian adults, average military enlistees per 1,000 civilian adults, as well as the percentage of AmeriCorps and Peace Corps volunteers. Based on this, WalletHub rated New Hampshire as the most patriotic state in America, followed by Wyoming, Vermont, Utah, and Idaho.
The survey also offered some other interesting findings. The more patriotic states are the ones that voted Republican in the 2016 presidential election and the highest percentage of adults who voted in the 2016 presidential election were in Maine. The opposite was true for Hawaii, Fox Business noted.
Alaska had the most veterans per capita while New York had the least and Georgia had the highest average number of military enlistees. On the opposite end of the scale, the lowest average was in North Dakota.
Here are the top 10 most patriotic states in America, according to WalletHub:
- New Hampshire
- Wyoming
- Vermont
- Utah
- Idaho
- Wisconsin
- Alaska
- South Carolina
- Missouri
- Minnesota
