Freddie Gray's mother was rushed to a Maryland hospital Wednesday night with injuries some sources say were self-inflicted.
Multiple sources confirmed to WJZ that Gloria Darden tried to kill herself, but received only superficial wounds. Emergency personnel were called to her home in North Baltimore around 9:35 p.m. Wednesday, the station said.
"I seen the police and ambulance right there. They were taking the lady out and putting her on the stretcher bed,” Diana Bruce, a neighbor, told WJZ.
The Daily Mail reported that Darden was undergoing a mental health assessment on Thursday after the incident.
Freddie Gray died of a spinal injury while in police custody earlier this year.
In a statement from Gray family attorney Bill Murphy,
quoted by The Washington Post, the family said, "Because of an improper invasion of her privacy, Ms. Darden is being thrust into the national spotlight about an extraordinarily personal matter while she is still mourning the loss of her son. I saw her today and I can assure you that this kind of publicity is not at all helpful. We strongly urge the media to show restraint. The family asks that you continue to pray for her and for them."
Gray, 25, was arrested in April and was critically injured during his transport to jail. The family was awarded $6.4 million in a civil settlement, and six police officers have been charged in his death.
Darden has been in mourning ever since, crying so hard in a
May interview with Lester Holt that she was barely able to speak.
