A Fresno hospital welcomed a trio of triplets in June and is expecting a fourth set in August, and experts are stunned at the unheard of frequency rate of the multiples.
The Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno delivered one set of triplets the week of June 7, the second set the week of June 18, and the third set a
mere three days later, according to The Associated Press. All nine babies were born via cesarean section and spent time in the hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit.
Dr. Steven Elliott at the Fresno hospital said that he has never cared for three sets of triplets simultaneously in his 30 years as neonatologist, according to the AP, because triplets are so rare with a birth rate of approximately 120 out of every 100,000 live births in the U.S. Thus, having three sets in one unit at the same time is remarkable.
“It’s time to buy a lottery ticket,”
Elliott joked in an interview, according to The Fresno Bee.
The birth of triplets is often associated with the use of fertility therapies and an older mother, The Fresno Bee noted. One of the new mothers, 38-year-old April Delgado, already has eight other children, none of whom were multiples. She declared that these three newborns would be her last.
“I thought they were lying,” Delgado said, adding that she was speechless when the doctors first told her she was having triplets.
Delgado’s babies, two identical girls and one singleton girl born on June 18, were quickly joined by first-time mom Christina Ramos’ triplets born on June 21. Ramos, 27, said that her husband “turned pale” when he learned that their first pregnancy would result in three children, according to The Fresno Bee.
Mother-to-be Stacie Trasoras, 37, isn’t due with her triplets until late August, though there is a distinct possibility that they will be born much sooner and join the trio of triplets currently in the intensive care unit.
