Police are investigating the death of a Fresno State University student at the Delta Sigma Phi fraternity house on Wednesday.

The student was reportedly a friend of a fraternity member.

The cause of death has not yet been identified by police, but friends said the victim became unconscious after he took a pill given to him by someone at the fraternity, ABC 30 reported.

“While the investigation continues, it is important to note that this was not connected to any chapter event and occurred during the school’s winter break,” the national chapter of Delta Sigma Phi said in a statement, Time reported. “We will continue to work closely with the university and law enforcement during its review.”

“We are deeply saddened by this tragic news, and our hearts are broken for the student’s family and friends,” Fresno State President Joseph Castro said in a statement.

Deaths of students at fraternities occurred at several other universities last year, which has led some schools to close fraternities in an effort to stop hazing and other dangerous practices.
