A social media campaign to make "Frozen's" Elsa gay and give her a girlfriend in any sequel to Disney's record-breaking animated movie appeared to get an endorsement of sorts from Idina Menzel, the voice of the movie character.
Menzel, who sang the Academy Award-winning song "Let It Go," in the movie, told
"Entertainment Tonight" before the Billboard Music Awards on Sunday in Las Vegas that Elsa "changed my life."
"I think it's great," the Broadway veteran and Tony Award winner, said about the social media campaign. "Disney's just gotta contend with that. I'll let them figure that out."
Alexis Isabel Moncada launched a campaign to give Elsa a gay love interest in late April, using the hashtag #GiveElsaAGirlfriend after tweeting about the idea, according to
MTV.
Moncada said on the MTV website earlier this month that the LGBT community already identify strongly with the movie.
"Many in the LGBT community view this movie as a metaphor for the experience of coming out and accepting who you are," Moncada said. "Yet Elsa, the film's protagonist, will probably end up with a male prince or king in the upcoming 'Frozen' sequel. These thoughts soon drenched my mind and pushed me to tweet about how 'iconic' it would be if 'Frozen's' Elsa were cast alongside a princess instead."
Kristen Bell, Menzel's "Frozen" co-star who voiced "Anna," though, told the website
Collider in March that the writing for "Frozen 2" was already done.
"They've just written it and they're still doing tweaks, but I think we should be recording this month," Bell told Collider then. "The story is great, and they exude quality. What I know about that whole team is that they wouldn't just put something out to put it out."
"That's why it took them so long to even announce that we were doing a second one. Generally when you have a first successful movie you want to make a second one. It took them a while because they wanted to figure out what story they needed to tell and what would be important and engaging and I think they found it."
Since the campaign started, a competing petition against the #GiveElsaAGirlfriend movement popped up May 13 on the website
CitizenGo. That petition, "Disney: No Princess for Queen Elsa #CharmingPrinceForElsa" has gathered more than 205,000 signatures online.
