'Frozen': Most Popular Toy in Holiday Survey Dethrones Barbie

By    |   Tuesday, 25 November 2014 07:46 PM EST

Barbie has been the most popular holiday gift for more than a decade, but this year the iconic doll will have to let it go as Disney’s "Frozen" has overtaken Barbie as the most popular toy.

The National Retail Federation's Holiday Top Toys survey found that 20 percent of parents plan to buy Disney’s "Frozen" merchandise.

This is the first year in the survey’s 11-year history that Barbie hasn’t held the top position. Almost 17 percent of parents plan to purchase Barbie dolls for their children.

Dolls took the top five spots for most popular toys for girls on the survey, with other popular dolls this year including Monster High and American Girl.

For boys, Legos hold the top spot, with 14.2 percent of parents planning to purchase the blocks. Legos ranked at No. 6 for girls.

Rounding out the top five toys for boys are cars and trucks, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, video games, and Hot Wheels.

Sales of “Frozen” merchandise could hit $1 billion in the United States this year, Fortune reported.

The popularity of the “Frozen” franchise led to merchandise shortages earlier this year, and retailers are working to ensure they are ready for the holiday season.

Meanwhile, Barbie continues to draw criticism as promoting negative body image and sexist stereotypes.

Barbie spokeswoman Lori Pantel told Time that Barbie books have been reworked since “Barbie: I Can Be a Computer Engineer” drew criticism for portraying Barbie as needing help from boys.

Mattel markets Barbie and Queen Elsa and Princess Anna dolls. In 2016, Hasbro Inc. will take over the doll license for "Frozen."
