The SAG-AFTRA union has launched an investigation into Gabrielle Union's forced exit from "America's Got Talent" following reports that the actress had allegedly complained about workplace toxicity.
A spokesperson for the performers' union confirmed in a statement to Variety on Sunday night that "steps to investigate this matter" had been taken.
Last week Variety ran an exclusive report detailing Union's allegations of racial slurs and discriminatory practices experienced during her time spent as a judge on the 14th season of "America's Got Talent." Shortly after she raised the issue with producers she was let go from the NBC show.
The network responded to the allegations in a combined statement with show producers Fremantle and Sycoreleased on Sunday.
"We remain committed to ensuring a respectful workplace for all employees and take very seriously any questions about workplace culture," the group said, according to Variety. "We are working with Ms. Union through her representatives to hear more about her concerns, following which we will take whatever next steps may be appropriate."
At issue is a joke by guest judge Jay Leno earlier this year. According to Variety, his offhand remark was offensive to Asian people. Union allegedly requested producers to raise this with human resources, but her request was not fulfilled, sources told Variety.
Responding to the ordeal SAG-AFTRA said it "immediately reached out to Ms. Union’s representatives when these reports came to light," according to Deadline. "It is our practice to work closely with members who reach out to us and their representatives in instances like this, as that usually affords the best protection and best resolution for the affected member."
Union declined to comment,
