"Game of Thrones" and IMAX have partnered to screen the previous season's last two episodes — featuring the battle at Castle Black and the season finale — for one week in late January. The screenings will also include a trailer for the upcoming season five of the HBO megahit series.
According to The New York Times, from January 23 to 29, roughly 150 IMAX theaters across the U.S. will take "Game of Thrones" from the small screen to the extra-big screen. The official "GOT" Twitter account confirmed as much on Tuesday.
The Times described the move as "a continued blurring of the lines among media platforms," ushering in an age where fans of the show can now see it on their mobile phone via the HBO Go app, their televisions via cable and satellite providers, and now theaters, too.
Furthermore, HBO announced late last year that it will offer its content separately as a standalone service from cable subscriptions for the first time ever in 2015.
With the fourth season averaging 19 million cumulative viewers, "Game of Thrones" is the most-watched HBO original series ever and, going into its fifth season this April, will help ignite a fire under the new standalone subscription offering.
Speaking to the upcoming IMAX screenings, chief marketing officer at HBO Pamela Levine said that, "'Game of Thrones' is one of the few television shows that has the scope and cinematic qualities to really support the IMAX format."
