A "transphobic" garlic bread meme is causing a stir on the Internet.
The Facebook page called Garlic Bread Memes — yes, there is such a thing — sparked an Internet fray that has been ongoing since the image was posted on June 5.
The meme is a picture of two slices of garlic bread below the caption, "If I had a slice of garlic bread for every existing gender."
Many people took to social media to express their outrage at what they assumed was intolerance to alternative gender identities.
The Washington Post said the war over the meme is as absurd as the garlic bread page itself, which is "funny because it makes fun of memes that exist already."
The page has more than 275,000 followers and is dedicated to posting garlic bread-themed versions of popular memes. By making an absurdity of offensive memes about gender and riling social justice warriors, the site's administrator was "trolling everyone involved in the online gender debate," The Post said.
The man behind the meme, who identified himself as an 18-year-old named Boaz from Israel,
defended it, telling BuzzFeed that he posted it because he thinks it's funny and "definitely not transphobic."
"I honestly think there are two genders. Trans people are not a gender — they are people that move from gender A to gender B," he wrote, adding: "Anyways, I believe that in humor no subject should be untouched."
LGBTQ Nation seemed to take the meme in good humor, quipping of the garlic bread page: "It’s intended to be a safe space for garlic bread aficionados to meet other, like-minded garlic-bread aficionados in a compassionate, non-judgmental environment."
The site also highlighted a comment from a transgender man, who said: "As a transman, I find this funny. There are literally 2 genders, every other 'gender' is based off of male and female."
Twitter users shared a wide range of viewpoints.
