Country music superstar Garth Brooks had to cancel some Florida shows after the Tampa Bay Lightning made it into the NHL's Stanley Cup finals and needs Tampa's Amalie Arena on Saturday for one of its hockey games.
Brooks broke the news of the canceled show on his
website Sunday, apologizing that his world tour with his music star wife Trisha Yearwood will have to skip its Tampa stop.
"First of all, we would all like to congratulate the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Chicago Blackhawks for reaching the Stanley Cup Final," said Brooks, citing safety concerns for the cancelations. "This was a hard decision for everyone. … We are convinced everything that could have been done was done to try to remedy the situation. Congrats again to the City of Tampa, good luck, and we will be watching the series."
Brooks said the idea of moving his two Saturday's shows to Sunday raised too many safety concerns to make it practical and he came to a mutual agreement with the arena to cancel the performance.
"Originally announced in March, the shows would have been Brooks' first gigs in the Tampa area since October 1998, when he sold out four consecutive shows at the Ice Palace,"
wrote Rolling Stone magazine's Andrew Leahey. "The country singer, who launched his comeback tour last year, is taking the news in stride."
Rolling Stone said the Brooks' world tour will roll on to Birmingham, Alabama, on June 12 after wrapping up four straight nights performing in Knoxville, Tennessee.
Fans expressed their disappointment about the cancelation on social media.
