George and Amal Clooney have donated $1 million to the Southern Poverty Law Center to combat hate groups in the U.S.
The couple announced on Tuesday that they would be handing the grant over to the Southern Poverty Law Center via the Clooney Foundation for Justice, Reuters reported.
This comes after a rally held by white supremacists in Charlottesville turned violent when participants encountered a group of counter-protesters. One woman was killed and others injured after a car ploughed into the crowd of counter-protesters.
"What happened in Charlottesville, and what is happening in communities across our country, demands our collective engagement to stand up to hate," the couple said in a statement released by the Southern Poverty Law Center.
The Southern Poverty Law Center is a non-profit organization dedicated to monitoring domestic hate groups and other extremists. In its statement, the organization said the donation would increase its capacity to combat these hate groups.
"Like George and Amal Clooney, we were shocked by the size, ugliness, and ferocity of the white supremacist gathering in Charlottesville," SPLC President Richard Cohen said in the statement. "It was a reflection of just how much Trump’s incendiary campaign and presidency has energized the radical right. We are deeply grateful to the Clooney Foundation for standing with us at this critical moment in our country’s fight against hate."
The Clooney Foundation for Justice was co-founded by the couple in 2016. The aim of the foundation is to help advance justice in communities around the world.
