Bush spokesman Freddy Ford told CNN that the partial knee replacement was successful and that Bush was "up walking around and even went up and down a flight of stairs just a couple hours after the procedure."

NBC Chicago said Bush, along with wife Laura and members of the Secret Service stayed at the Peninsula Hotel, where doctors visited him.

The former president gave up running in 2004 and switched to mountain biking because of a torn meniscus in his knee.

In August, Bush had heart surgery to put in a stent to open a blocked artery.

Earlier this month, Bush hosted 16 wounded veterans for his annual three-day, 100-kilometer mountain bike ride in Crawford. The Dallas Morning News reported that he finished the event without any trouble, but mentioned some nagging knee pain.
