Georgia Tech Speech at Convocation is Epic, Goes Viral (Video)

By    |   Thursday, 22 August 2013 04:28 PM EDT

A speech given this week at Georgia Tech's convocation stirred up not just incoming freshmen, but the Internet as well.

Nicholas Selby, a sophomore majoring in mechanical engineering, delivered an awe-inspiring address at Georgia Institute of Technology’s convocation, and the speech has already captured several hundred thousand views and generated countless comments on social media.

It started innocently enough, with Selby saying, “We chose Georgia Tech because we want to do the impossible, and this school is equipped with the resources and faculty to help us do just that.”

Then, with the soundtrack from "2001: A Space Odyssey" providing the backdrop, Selby kicked it up a notch. Or five.

“Crush the shoulders of the giants upon whom we stand!” he exhorted the students. “We here are all such innovative people. So I am telling you, if you want to change the world, you’re at Georgia Tech! You can do that! If you want to build the Iron Man suit, you’re at Georgia Tech! You can do that! And if you want to play theme music during your convocation speech like a badass, we’re at Georgia Tech, we can do that! I am doing that!”

After a brief pause, Selby concluded with a simple message: “Congratulations on your acceptance and brace yourselves for a hell of a ride on your way to becoming a hell of an engineer."

Social networking sites were still abuzz a few days after the speech went viral.

“Man, I wish I would’ve gone to Georgia Tech,” tweeted @petron3160.

“This is how we do it,” tweeted New York Yankees star and Georgia Tech alum Mark Teixeira.

“Need some inspiration? Listen to this! (even if you’re not attending Georgia Tech in the fall),” tweeted @MonicaJoColonna.

The Huffington Post said that “if you don’t find yourself inspired, and possibly even wanting to attend Georgia Tech after watching this video, then nothing in this world is bound to do so.”

CNN reports that Selby is co-leader of Team Solar Jackets, the university’s squad that built and raced a solar-powered car in the Formula Sun Grand Prix, and also has been named a president’s scholar, representing the top 2 percent of students enrolled at the school.
