Georgina Chapman, Harvey Weinstein's estranged wife, has opened up for the first time publicly about her marriage to the disgraced movie mogul following a string of sexual assault accusations that toppled his career.
In a new Vogue interview, the 42-year-old fashion designer described her 10-year marriage to Weinstein as "happy," so when the bomb dropped about the allegations against him, she was shell-shocked.
“I lost 10 pounds in five days. I couldn’t keep food down,” Chapman told Vogue, recounting the first few days after the scandal exploded.
Hollywood was rocked in October by a pair of stories in The New York Times and The New Yorker magazine detailing years of alleged sexual harassment and abuse claims, including rape.
Eight women initially shared their stories in the exposés, which prompted dozens of others to speak out against the famed producer, who has denied all reports of non-consensual sex.
"The first article was about a time long before I’d ever met him, so there was a minute where I couldn’t make an informed decision," Chapman said.
But when the reports continued to pour in, she realized it was not an isolated incident and that she needed to act for the sake of their two young children.
"I knew that I needed to step away and take the kids out of here," she told Vogue.
Chapman sought refuge at her parents' home in London and waited for the media frenzy to die down, but it never did.
Instead, many turned on Chapman, saying that she must have known about the alleged sexual abuse.
A close friend, Karen Elson, told Vogue that it was one of the first things people would say when they found out she knew Chapman.
"Like she is somehow responsible for his hideous behavior," Elson noted.
"When I say, ‘Well, actually she didn’t know,’ it becomes this other judgment: ‘How could she not have known?’ Or: ‘Well, that’s on her if she didn’t.’ It’s so complicated.”
Shortly after the scandal broke, Chapman made the decision to file for divorce and earlier this year they agreed to a settlement, People magazine reported.
