Authorities are investing whether a German man was imprisoned by his parents for 30 years after German police found him living in isolation.

The 43-year-old man, who was isolated at his parents’ home in Bavaria for three decades, has been taken to a psychiatric hospital, according to The Associated Press.

German police are investigating the man’s parents to see if they did anything wrong.

After neighbors in Freienfels, northern Bavaria, reported to police that they heard the man moaning on Sept. 21, police raided the home and found the man in a neglected condition, according to The Guardian.

“The man was unkempt, unwashed, but well nourished,” police spokesman Juergen Stadter said, according to the AP. “But he wasn’t constrained and had several rooms to himself where he could move around freely.”

It’s those conditions that are making way for a bizarre investigation, as police are also looking into whether the man stayed inside for all those years out of force from his parents or free will.

“We still don’t know exactly for how long the man has had no contact with the outside world and … whether or not he was allowed to leave the property at all,” Stadter told the German media, according to The Guardian.

“We assume that he was suffering from some kind of handicap,” Stadter said, adding that the man stopped attending school at the age of 13 after being declared unfit to attend, the AP noted.

The man’s parents, who are both in their upper 70s, are under investigation on “suspicion of possible deprivation of freedom and causing bodily harm by neglect,” the AP noted.

The man’s mother, who remains unnamed, was on record telling the local Nordbayerischer Kurier newspaper that she and her husband didn’t lock their son up and “he didn’t want to go outside.”

She added that her son “had enough of life,” indicating that as a little boy, her son was bullied by his schoolmates. “He wanted to stay with us. If I were to tell you what we went through, you wouldn’t believe me. All I ever wanted to do was protect him.”
