German Store's Hitler Mugs, an 'Unfortunate Error,' Prompt Investigation

German Store's Hitler Mugs, an 'Unfortunate Error,' Prompt Investigation

A German furniture store has apologized for selling nearly 200 coffee mugs with Hitler's picture on them. Police are currently investigating the store.

"Our staff is devastated by this very unfortunate error. We have been in touch with the manufacturer ... to prevent further distribution of these nasty cups," said Christian Zurbrueggen, co-owner of the Zurbrueggen retail chain, according to NBC News.

Zurbrueggen said no one at the store noticed a small swastika nor a black and white photo of Hitler's face on a postage stamp when they ordered 5,000 of the mugs from a Chinese manufacturer at a trade fair. The image is faint, placed in the background of the mugs' primary imagery of roses and English words in cursive.

Displaying swastikas and other Nazi imagery is illegal in Germany.

"Police are presently collecting evidence and will forward their findings to the prosecutor’s office, where we will have to determine whether there would be reasonable suspicion of a deliberate act," Christoph Mackel of the local prosecutor’s office said, NBC reported.

Zurbrueggen said the $2.70 mug had been on display for three or four days before an employee noticed the photo of the infamous dictator who called for mass genocide in the '30s and '40s.

The store is offering a $27 reward to anyone who returns any of the purchased mugs, which will be promptly destroyed like the others. Six have been returned so far.

"We unintentionally ordered these cups and want to take them out of circulation as quickly as possible," Zurbrueggen explained.

He said the company plans to seek a refund from the Chinese manufacturer.
