A "ghetto party" hosted by Fairfield University students at an off-campus location is being investigated by the university after word leaked about students wearing baggy clothes, gold chains, fake baby bumps, and holding 40-ounce beers, reported
WNYW-TV.
Jennifer Anderson, Fairfield's vice president of marketing and communications, confirmed the school, including its diversity officials, were looking into the incident but said they haven't come to any conclusions, reported the
Connecticut Post.
"There was a party on Saturday evening, at a house on the beach," Anderson told the Post. "We are working to understand the details."
Fairfield President Jeffrey P. von Arx sent out an email Monday saying the party had "no place in our community and only served to offend and devalue people," according to
Fairfield Patch.
"I am personally aware of and sensitive to the impact that this incident is having on our student body," said Arx. "Both within and outside the classroom, we have spoken to many of our students, and heard the personal accounts for how this incident has impacted them."
"Their concerns go beyond the incident this weekend. To some within our community, this incident is symptomatic of conditions on campus that inhibit our many positive efforts to build a more inclusive, respectful, and safer community."
A university spokeswoman told WNYW-TV that even though the party took place off campus, students are still held to the institution's code of conduct.
"Fairfield University is explicitly committed as a Jesuit and Catholic university to a culture that embraces and celebrates diversity," said Arx. "We actively encourage conversations and multicultural education programs that deepen our cultural competence."
At least one student who attended the party, Brian Mason, told the Connecticut Post that he didn't understand what the fuss was about.
"It's like Halloween, where I'm dressed as a gangster," Mason told the publication. "Nobody said anything then."
