Writers of the Disney Channel show “Girl Meets World,” a spinoff of the '90s sitcom “Boy Meets World,” confirmed Wednesday the show has been canceled.

The Girl Meets Writers Twitter account shared that the show, which was nominated twice for outstanding children’s program Emmys, was ending after three final episodes air in January. The writers said they were proud of the show and told the audience that “we gave you our best.”

“We are proud that for over 70 episodes, (co-creators) Michael Jacobs, April Kelly and the talented creative team, cast and crew entertained viewers with an authentic and heartfelt look at navigating adolescence,” Disney Channel said in a statement, Access Hollywood reported.

The show chronicled “Boy Meets World” characters Cory Matthews and Topanga Lawrence as they parented their children Riley and Auggie. The show particularly focused on lessons learned by the various characters, often through the tutelage of Mr. Matthews, who grew up to be a teacher like his beloved Mr. Feeny (who appeared on the spinoff in a cameo role).

"Girl Meets World" viewership had declined from more than 5 million during the first season to only 1.5 million per episode in Season 3, according to Forbes, a drop that may have led to its cancellation.

Rowan Blanchard wrote a long letter on Twitter detailing how the show had impacted her life and thanking the audience for watching. Fellow "Girl Meets World" star Sabrina Carpenter also shared positive thoughts about the experience on Instagram. Both actors said the cast was like a family and that they were privileged to get to grow up on the show.
