A 16-year-old girl who reportedly turned down a boy's invitation to prom was stabbed to death at a Connecticut high school Friday and he was arrested in the attack.

Police said the incident happened in a hallway at Jonathan Law High School in Milford, Conn., in front of other students and staff, WTNH-TV reported.

The girl, Maren Sanchez, was transported to Bridgeport Hospital where she was pronounced dead at about 7:40 a.m.

The television station reported that school was dismissed as result of the death and that the prom would be postponed to another date.

The New York Daily News quoted witnesses and police who said the attacker used a kitchen knife from his home to stab Sanchez in the neck.

"She was screaming," one student told the Daily News of the attack. "There were students in the hallway when it happened. The kids who saw it are all a wreck."

Elizabeth Feser, Milford's school superintendent, told WTNH-TV that Sanchez was an athlete, a National Honor Society member, and was well-liked and respected. Students told the Daily News that Sanchez was a member of the school's drama club.

Sanchez was preparing to play a role in the school musical "Little Shop of Horrors," according to the Daily News.

"She was one of the nicest kids in the building," one friend told the Daily News. "Very respectful."

Milford Police Chief Keith Mello said he heard multiple reports that the attack was a result of victim turning down her attacker as a date for the prom, The Washington Post reported, but that was being investigated.

Earlier this month, a 16-year-old student in Murrysville, Pa., with two knives injured 22 people before he was tackled by an assistant principal at Franklin Regional Senior High School. The armed suspect made his way down the hallway stabbing students before he was stopped.
